A May Scenic Tasting Adventure Through Reims' Finest Estates

by Karen Hiatt

May always makes me think about Mothers, Grandmothers and all the wonderful women in my life and oddly enough, Reims.  As most everyone knows, I lived in France and love to talk about the remarkable areas and cities I love.  Are you going to the Olympics?  Consider a side trip to Reims.  (pronounced RAANS not REEMS)  All of those who try to pronounce it as "Raans" are guaranteed a friendly smile from the locals.

A Day of Discovery and Delight in Reims: Churches, Art, and History
As the morning sun bathes the cobblestone streets of Reims in a golden glow, our journey begins, promising a day filled with exploration, indulgence, and unforgettable experiences. Join me as we embark on a captivating adventure through this historic city, where centuries of art, culture, and culinary delights await.

Morning Exploration: Churches,  Art, and History
Our first stop takes us on a journey through faith and art, as we visit the Cathedral of Notre-Dame and the Saint Remi Basilica. At Notre-Dame, marvel at the majestic Gothic architecture and immerse yourself in the sublime beauty of Marc Chagall's stained glass windows, each a testament to the power of divine inspiration. Then, wander through the tranquil cloisters of the Saint Remi Basilica, where centuries of history unfold amidst the serenity of Romanesque splendor.

Next, we'll venture to the Musée de la Réddition, where history comes alive in the very room where the surrender of Nazi Germany was signed 79 years ago, May 7, 1945. Explore artifacts and exhibits that chronicle this pivotal moment in World War II, honoring the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom.

Lunchtime Indulgence: Lobster in the Plaza
As the midday sun reaches its zenith, we'll make our way to the bustling plaza, where an indulgent feast awaits. Take a seat at a quaint bistro and savor the succulent flavors of fresh lobster, paired with crisp champagne and accompanied by the lively ambiance of the city. Let each bite be a celebration of life's simple pleasures and the joy of sharing good food with great company.

Afternoon Delight: Champagne Tasting
With appetites sated and spirits high, our adventure continues with a journey into the heart of champagne country. Embark on a scenic drive through the rolling vineyards of the Champagne region, where the air is alive with the promise of bubbly delights. Arriving at a prestigious champagne house, we'll be greeted with warmth and hospitality as we embark on a guided tasting experience.

Savor the effervescent notes of Blanc de Blancs and the rich complexity of Vintage Rosé, as knowledgeable sommeliers guide us through the nuances of each cuvée. Raise your glass to the artistry of winemaking and the centuries-old tradition of champagne production, knowing that each sip is a testament to the passion and dedication of generations of vignerons.  Learn how the Veuve Clicquot yes there really was such a person, changed the way champagne is made, forever.  Nope, I am not going to give it away.  Lanson Pommery, Ruinart, and Taittinger are just a few of the Champagne Houses you can visit. If your bucket list includes UNESCO World Heritage Sites you will be able to check one more.

Conclusion: A Day to Remember
As the sun begins to set on our day of discovery and delight, let us cherish the memories we've created and the experiences we've shared. From the awe-inspiring beauty of Reims' churches to the indulgent pleasures of lobster lunch and champagne tasting, our journey has been a celebration of life's greatest treasures – art, culture, history and the joy of exploration. So, as we bid adieu to this enchanting city, may our hearts be full, our spirits lifted, and our thirst for adventure forever quenched. Cheers to Reims – a place where every moment is a toast to the beauty of life itself.
